Makeup and perfume chain Ulta Salon, Cosmetics and & Fragrances Inc. reported that its second-quarter net income jumped sharply on cost reductions and stronger sales, and its results beat analyst expectations.

The company said it earned $13.1 million, or 22 cents per share, for the quarter, compared with $5.8 million, or 10 cents per share, a year earlier. Adjusting for a one-time compensation-related charge in the most recent quarter the company earned 25 cents per share.

Ulta’s revenue grew 17.6 percent to $321.8 million.

The results beat the average forecast of analyst surveyed by Thomson Reuters for 18 cents per share on revenue of $314.9 million. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Ulta also reported that sales at its stores open more than a year rose 10.7 percent, compared with a 1.7 percent decrease in the same quarter last year. This is considered a key indicator of a retailer’s financial performance as it strips away results from recently opened and closed stores.

The company said it expects this momentum to continue.

Ulta now expects to earn 18 to 20 cents per share for the third quarter, which includes a 2 cent per share one-time charge. Analysts anticipate the company will earn 16 cents per share.

Shares of Ulta jumped $1.97, nearly 9 percent, to $24.20 in after-hours trading.
